No fewer than 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
