Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
