Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
